International Citizen Service (ICS) is a once-in-a-lifetime overseas volunteering opportunity open to all 18-25 year olds, funded by the UK Government
ICS is a development programme that brings together young people from the UK and developing countries to volunteer in some of the poorest communities in Africa and Asia.
The UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) funds 90% of the ICS programme. The other 10% is funded by volunteer fundraising.
You don’t have to pay for ICS, but volunteer fundraising makes up 10% of our funding. Your fundraising shows commitment, enables you to learn more about ICS and helps you develop important skills.
As well as structured training and support, ICS volunteers receive their visas, flights, travel and medical insurance, medication, vaccines, food and accommodation and a small allowance during their placement.
We work with the local community to make long-lasting improvements in developing countries across Africa and Asia.

We offer young people in the UK the chance to change their life - and many others' - forever. With a presence in 10 countries worldwide, we work with local volunteers to support community projects that provide communities with better education, opportunities to earn a decent living, and access to effective health care and services as well as protecting their environment.
Volunteer personal development is a key part of ICS, alongside making a difference overseas, we work to build and develop our volunteers. Volunteers benefit from comprehensive training as part of the programme, they take part in a challenging overseas placement and support work at home. This builds vital transferable skills that contribute towards personal development and finding a job.
ICS is a once in a lifetime opportunity to change your world.
In a recent survey of our volunteers:
• 98% say that the experience has been very useful for their professional development
• 99% say the experience has been very useful for their personal development
• 97% keep in touch with their ICS teammates after placement
• 96% would recommend the programme to others
At ICS we are committed to delivering an inclusive programme and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the journey to ensure that all volunteers have a positive experience of international volunteering.
