Abby's Graduate Story

Onwards to our company and culture…

We are Colas Rail

One of the world's leading providers of rail infrastructure services, our award-winning specialists design and manage all forms of railway across Europe and the UK.

Our Culture

Our Culture - What we do

We provide total rail solutions for some of Europe's most high-profile projects, including the delivery of major maintenance frameworks for Network Rail and the development of Morocco's first high-speed train line.

Our brand is well established, and we are proud of our reputation within the rail industry.

We are a multicultural and diverse organisation, committed to delivering on our promises to our employees, and lead with our key values: Safety; Profitability; Quality and Respect.

At Colas Rail, we look outwards to our customers and make sure to see things from their point of view. We respect their opinions, respond to their suggestions and are proactive in anticipating their needs.

In this way we are creative and innovative in our approach, always aiming to exceed the expectations of those with whom we work.

We have a long-running tradition of developing talent and giving graduates the opportunity to take their career in their own hands. Many of the talented people who have joined our schemes have been supported and trusted to the lead on major projects and tenders for the company.

Our strength in this area has been formally recognised by the 2015 Graduate Scheme award, and the 2016 Outstanding Teamwork Award, at the UK Rail Industry Awards.

The opportunities here are never-ending. We are working on some incredibly exciting projects, including our £400 million project to regenerate Waterloo – the busiest station in Europe – over the next three years. We are also delivering major schemes overseas in North Africa and Asia, which means there may be the potential to travel.

Yet, it's not all work; we offer plenty of social events to bring our people together, in addition to the informal day-to-day socialising that goes on. Expect the opportunity to join a host organised events, such as the annual charity bike ride, and our in-house football tournament which is very popular.

Our Future - Where we're going

Why Graduates Are Key to Our Future

Ondrej Roubicek, Senior Vice President for Colas Rail Infrastructure

Colas Rail is part of a wider international group, which operates in 80 countries, across 5 continents and makes a net profit of €1.1 billion annually. Being part of this larger unit means we have a solid financial, technical and management foundation, as well as access to very high levels of expertise and specialist resources in rail operations, logistics and technology.

We welcome the future of the railway industry with continued enthusiasm and a commitment to improve everything we do. There are many exciting opportunities that lie ahead in creating tomorrow’s railways. High-speed rail, light urban systems, high-output automated track maintenance and commercial rail freight are all areas that will become increasingly important to the UK in the future. They are also areas in which we excel and have a depth of experience and expertise.

Although these are all headline-grabbing projects, the continual maintenance and upgrading of the UK’s rail network also remains a task that we are fully committed to and are leading the field within.

All of our success is achieved through our greatest asset: our people. Since 2008, the company has grown three-fold and it doesn’t stop here. We want to continue as a major player within the industry and be a part of building the railway of the future.

Talent development has been key to our success and will continue to be as we develop as an organisation. Today, about a quarter of our managers are ex-graduates. We want to extend and accelerate this trend going forwards. We know that in order to meet our future challenges, we must bring in fresh, talented graduates and help them to become the best they can be.
