Summer Diversity Internship Programme

  • • Location: UK-wide
  • • Duration: 6 - 9 weeks
  • • Salary: £300 - £350 per week

What you will be doing

Whoever you are, whatever your background, our Summer Diversity Internship Programme (SDIP) could change your life. Our award-winning programme gives talented undergraduates from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to see what a career in the Civil Service is like.

Your work placement in a government department offers a great insight into the broad range of opportunities across the Civil Service. It’s also a brilliant way to prepare for a place on one of our Fast Stream graduate programmes, which could lead to many different career paths at the heart of the UK government.

You’ll have full support, including an allocated Fast Stream buddy and a scheme manager to guide you. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to gain a ‘Fast Pass’. This could enable you to be fast-tracked to the final stage of Fast Stream selection.

What you will have

For this programme applications are invited from people who are from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background, people with a disability and those from a lower socio economic background. You also need to be in your final two years at University.

Our Culture - What we do

Assisting with the development and execution of Government policies, some of the important work we do includes: shaping healthcare; collecting the money that pays for public services; ensuring we have secure, clean and affordable energy; leading global work to end poverty and providing aid during humanitarian emergencies.

There’s no such thing as a typical Civil Servant. We work in just about every town and city in Britain, and come from every background you can think of. With us, the things that make you unique will be respected and celebrated.

What is it like to work in the Civil Service?

We do it all, which means we offer a wide range of career paths and experiences. No matter what your interests are, we’ll have a scheme to suit you.

We are driven to transform the brightest graduates into effective and inspiring leaders at the heart of the political process.

Working in the Civil Service is a unique development opportunity.

We believe in the importance of having a good work-life balance.

Of course there will be times when you are busy, but we will always give you the freedom to work flexibly and fit work in around your life. There will be plenty of social trips to enjoy too.

You can expect incredible support and training, as well as a career offering plenty of variety and opportunities. Plus, you'll join a strong cohort of other grads, all learning and developing at the same time as you. This means a guaranteed support network – professional and social - to help you settle in quickly.

My day-to-day job is trying to make the government as efficient as possible at what it does.
