Join our Diplomatic Service Fast Stream

There's no such thing as a typical Diplomatic career. You could be based in London or working in one of the Foreign Office's small, challenging or remote embassies, or working on global issues in one of our large embassies in Washington and Paris.

What you will be doing

The award-winning Fast Stream is the leadership development programme that develops the highest potential graduates to become the future leaders of the Civil Service. Joining the Fast Stream offers the unique opportunity to make a difference to the whole of society. The Civil Service supports the government of the day to implement its policies effectively. Fast Streamers help to shape the decisions that will affect everyone’s lives and to deliver the public services that we all rely on.

You might focus on bilateral work, multilateral work, consular support, media and communications, project management or decide to specialise in a particular region of the world. Foreign Office staff change roles routinely every 3 to 4 years. You’ll apply for each role according to your preferences, career ambitions, and personal circumstances.

Your training will help your understand how the Foreign and Commonwealth Office work and also diplomatic tradecraft:

  • • Job-specific training, often including a visit to one of our embassies overseas.
  • • A buddy from the previous year’s Fast Stream intake
  • • Coaching and mentoring available.

What you will have

You can choose up to 4 scheme preferences when you apply to the Fast Stream. So, whether you are looking for your first graduate role, seeking to return to work, or change profession, the Fast Stream is the ideal place to progress a meaningful, fulfilling career.

We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process.

All Diplomatic Service Fast Streamers must be granted ‘Developed Vetting’ security clearance before starting. You can also apply for the Diplomatic Service (Economics) scheme provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

  • You have or expect to have, 2:2 degree or higher in any subject. Existing civil servants can apply without a degree
  • You have eligibility to work in the UK (those with dual nationality may apply) who have been a resident in the UK for at least 2 out of the last 10 years

What is it like to work in the Civil Service?

The Fast Stream is an award-winning graduate leadership development programme. We offer structured development, with a choice of 15 schemes, each within a profession and the opportunity to experience multiple government departments.

Fast Streamers benefit from flexible working that enables work-life balance and a competitive salary. The minimum starting salary is between £27,000 - £28,000 with salary progression on the scheme and earnings potential on completion, of £45,000-£55,000.
