We are the University of Birmingham

For more than a century, the University of Birmingham has been pursuing and sharing knowledge through outstanding teaching and world-leading research.

We are the original ‘redbrick’ University, part of the prestigious Russell Group; our thriving student population enjoys a wide range of courses, and exceptional campus and research facilities.

The 10 Nobel Laureates we count among our staff and alumni have contributed to some of science’s greatest discoveries, including in recent times the Higgs Boson and Gravitational Waves. Our research provides innovative solutions to the challenges we face in our city, our region and across the globe.

We encourage and empower people to turn ideas into reality and make important things happen.

In 2023, the University is offering AI and Data Science Conversion Masters Scholarships for 7 Masters programmes to up skill students from non-STEM and far-STEM degrees and progress into the AI and Data Science workforce.

This will include 120 students from under-represented groups, particularly women, Black and disabled students and those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, who will each be supported by a £10,000 scholarship. Eligible programmes include MSc Bioinformatics, MSc Computer Science, MSc Data Science, MSc Financial Technology, MSc Health Data Science and MSc Responsible Data Science.

Who can apply?

The award is part of £8.1 million funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and Office for Artificial Intelligence to encourage more women, Black students, disabled students, and students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to study artificial intelligence (AI) and data science postgraduate programmes (see Eligibility criteria below for full details).

The conversion scholarships are for students who have never studied STEM or STEM related degrees before. Students must have a UK nationality or residence status.

Students must have already submitted an application for a place on a University of Birmingham Data Science or AI related Masters course before applying for this scholarship.

The deadline for applications to the scholarship for all programmes apart from MSc Bioinformatics (Online) is 23:59 (UK Time) on 31 July 2023*.

The deadlines for applications to the scholarship for MSc Bioinformatics (Online) are:

• October 2023 Intake - 15 September 2023
